The Anambra State Police Command has commenced enforcement of a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, aimed at curbing the use of unregistered vehicles and the concealment of vehicle registration numbers as part of efforts to strengthen security and crime prevention across the state.
The command said the exercise follows growing concerns over the increasing use of unregistered vehicles and the deliberate obstruction, alteration, or concealment of number plates, practices it noted have continued to impede vehicle identification and undermine public safety.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said vehicle owners and users have been advised to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and that number plates remain visible at all times.
According to the statement, the enforcement drive is in compliance with directives issued by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and relevant provisions of the law regulating vehicle registration and identification.
The police warned that acts such as covering, bending, defacing, removing, altering, or using unauthorised number plates constitute violations of the law and would attract appropriate sanctions.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, explained that the exercise is designed to enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen security operations, and facilitate the prompt identification of vehicles linked to criminal activities.
He urged motorists to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by complying with all vehicle registration requirements and refraining from actions capable of concealing the identity of their vehicles.
“The enforcement exercise is aimed at strengthening security, enhancing intelligence gathering, and facilitating the prompt identification of vehicles used in the commission of crimes,” the commissioner stated.
The command further assured residents that officers deployed for the operation had been directed to conduct themselves professionally, courteously, and in strict accordance with the law.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the police urged residents and visitors to support ongoing efforts to maintain security and order across the state.
The statement added that the command remains dedicated to protecting lives and property while ensuring compliance with regulations designed to promote effective policing and public safety.
